Telenursery for Partner Hospitals

A Valley Children's neonatologist attends to a patient via telenursey capabilities

Empowering Community Hospitals with 24/7 Neonatal Expertise

Valley Children’s Healthcare is proud to offer TeleNursery — a telemedicine solution designed to provide on-demand support and evidenced based newborn stabilization in community hospital settings. Through secure, high-quality video consultations, our program delivers immediate access to neonatology specialists, ensuring timely, expert support during critical moments.

Clinical Scenarios We Support

In situations where a newborn requires resuscitation immediately after birth, the TeleNursery program provides real-time, expert guidance from neonatology specialists. This support is crucial during high-stakes delivery room events, such as when a baby is not breathing properly, has a low heart rate, or shows signs of distress. The remote Neonatologist can walk the bedside team through advanced resuscitation procedures, monitor the baby’s response and make recommendations to the bedside clinicians, supporting and ensuring the highest standard of care.

When a newborn experiences respiratory distress — difficulty breathing or inadequate oxygenation — the TeleNursery solution allows for immediate assessment by a neonatologist. The neonatologists can observe the baby via live video, help interpret vital signs and clinical findings, and guide the team through interventions such as providing supplemental oxygen, initiating continuous positive airway pressure or mechanical ventilation, and determining the need for further diagnostics or transfer to a higher level of care.

Using live audio-video technology, TeleNursery enables remote neonatologists to perform direct visual assessments of newborns. These “eyes-on” evaluations support bedside clinicians in diagnosing and making critical decisions about care, such as identifying criteria of therapeutic hypothermia, subtle physical findings, evaluating the severity of illness and determining if immediate interventions or specialist consultations are necessary.

In complex cases, TeleNursery neonatologists provide expert input on laboratory tests, imaging studies and treatment protocols. They guide the team, helping to prioritize interventions, interpret test results and recommend medications or therapies. This ensures that newborns receive standardized, high-quality care while awaiting possible transfer or further evaluation.
