Prescription for Play: Building Healthy Kids, One Block at a Time
June 11, 2026From your baby’s first smile to those wobbly first steps, so much happens in the early years of life. One of the most magical parts of the toddler stage is watching your child’s world grow through play. A block becomes a tower. A tower becomes a castle. And just like that—imagination takes off.
At Fresno Children’s Pediatrics, we are proud to support that growth through our Prescription for Play program.
What is Prescription for Play?
Prescription for Play is a program designed for toddlers ages 18–36 months. During well-child visits, families receive simple tools—like Duplo blocks—and guidance on how play supports healthy development.
Think of it as a “prescription” not for medicine, but for something just as powerful: time, connection and creativity.
Why Play Matters
Play is not just fun—it’s how children learn.
When your toddler stacks blocks, they are building more than a tower. They are developing:
- Language skills (talking about colors, shapes and stories)
- Motor skills (using hands and fingers to build)
- Problem-solving skills (figuring out how to balance and create)
- Social skills (playing with parents, siblings, or friends)
In short, play helps build the brain!
Bringing Play into the Clinic
This year, we launched Prescription for Play as part of a resident quality improvement project at Fresno Children’s Pediatrics. And the response? Pure joy.
Families lit up when they received their Duplo boxes. Parents shared how excited their children were to start building right away—sometimes even in the exam room!
But even more meaningful was the connection it sparked. These simple toys became a bridge between caregivers and children, creating moments of shared laughter and learning.
Play Over Screens
We live in a world full of screens. Phones, tablets and television are around us all the time. While technology has its place, young children learn best through hands-on, face-to-face interaction.
Blocks offer something special:
- No batteries
- No notifications
- Just time together
Even a few minutes a day of focused play can make a big difference. It’s a chance to pause, be present and connect with your child.
Simple Ways to Play at Home
You don’t need a big plan to make play meaningful. Try:
- Sitting on the floor and building together
- Letting your child lead the activity
- Talking about what you’re making (“Let’s build a tall tower!”)
- Celebrating their creations—no matter how wobbly!
Building More Than Towers
Prescription for Play is about more than toys. It’s about creating moments that support healthy growth and strong relationships. Because when we make time to play, we’re not just building towers—we’re building brains, confidence and connection.
And that might be the best prescription of all.
