At Valley Children’s, taking care of kids is at the heart of everything we do, from researching the most innovative treatments to hiring the best specialists, we want the best care for kids to be right here in the Central Valley.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce new physicians to our Valley Children’s family. Meet our new neurologists: Dr. Giancarlo Lugo and Dr. Milagros Silva-Colon. These new doctors are experts in their field and are already treating patients, getting children healthy and back to being the best kid-selves they can be.

Meet Dr. Giancarlo Lugo, MD
After earning his medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine (UCCSoM) in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Dr. Lugo completed a residency in pediatrics at the University Pediatric Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He then completed a residency in pediatric neurology at Boston Medical Center.

When asked what stood out about Valley Children’s, Dr. Lugo explains he appreciated the experience the Valley Children’s Neurology team has and the uniqueness in the patients the department teats.

“This area serves patients in need, without questioning about payment or resources. That appeals to me very much,” says Dr. Lugo.

Fun Fact: While Dr. Lugo has a passion for volunteering in medical settings, when he’s not working you can find him traveling, watching movies and playing the guitar.

Meet Milagros Silva-Colon, MD
Dr. Silva-Colon earned her medical degree from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Jalisco, México. Prior to her pediatric residency at Hospital Episcopal San Lucas in Ponce, Puerto Rico, she served as an intern at New York Medical College. Dr. Silva-Colon then completed two fellowships: the first in pediatric neurology from Floating Hospital for Children, Tufts Medical Center, and the second a clinical neurophysiology fellowship at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Dr. Silva-Colon was most excited that Valley Children’s is a level 4 epilepsy center – a place she can grow in her profession and experience. Additionally though, it was the Central Valley area that enticed her to move to California.

“I was [interested] in a place that offered a good work and life balance with a work team that is supportive and knowledgeable,” shares Dr. Silva. “All of these options were available here.”

Fun Fact: Dr. Silva-Colon’s presentation on Epidemiologic and Clinical Manifestations of Chikungunya in a Naïve Population of Puerto Rico received first place in the 11th Annual Scientific Conference of Ponce Health Science University and Ponce Research Institute.

Bonus Fun Fact: Both our new neurologists are fluent in English and Spanish!

Did you know our pediatric neurology and neurosurgery department is ranked as one of the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report? While this ranking is fun for us to share, we know what it really means: that our patients -- their strength, determination and bravery -- inspire all of us to bring our best every day. Welcome Drs. Lugo and Silva-Colon! We’re excited to have you join the Valley Children’s family and help us bring our best to the kids here in the Central Valley!
